“These are the same people who put chemicals on our lawns, fix our food at restaurants and care for our elderly. Yet they have trouble reading labels, don’t always understand what is said and have trouble navigating telephone answering machines. For the good of the community, we must help.”
– Peg Coker, Executive Director
How to Help
Volunteer to Tutor: You don't have to have a background in education or a second language to help. Literacy tutors are patient, good listeners and give practical information. You will meet with one adult for one hour a week at a time and public location that is convenient. Our tutor training will familiarize you with the most up-to-date methods used to teach adults reading, writing and English as a second language.
Are you thinking about becoming involved? Here is what our literacy volunteers have to say about the tutor experience.
Volunteer Your Expertise: The Board of Directors conducts much of its business through working committees and task groups that organize and stage several events each year. These are perfect options for people who want to be involved but who have limited time.
Join the Trivia Bee: Many of our friends become involved in the Trivia Bee for Literacy, our annual fundraiser. The funds we collect from team fees, raffle ticket sales and other generous donations are used to promote literacy in the Fox Valley.
Donate: Your donation is always welcome and tax-deductible as allowed by law. For cash donations, send your check to: Literacy Volunteers Fox Valley, One South Sixth Avenue , St. Charles , IL 60174 . We also accept Paypal.
